Dear Internet: An Epiphany By Warren[isweird]

n38zyjp

[an accurate representation of my mind since Tuesday this past week]

Internet, we need to talk. You are probably going to want to sit down for this one, because I have something extremely important I want to talk [well, technically write] to you all about: the future of warrenisweird. If you follow me on Instagram, on Twitter, or even in real life; you probably have a good idea of where this post is headed before I even start. sigh. Believe me when I say, this is harder for me to say than it is for you to read it. Ready? This is going to be a long one so take a deep breath with me, and let’s talk. Okay, here goes.

If you have been following warrenisweird since the beginning, you would know/remember that I work at a funeral home and have been for a while now. [my fourth year is coming this July!] You would also know that my chosen career path is to become a fully Licensed Funeral Director. While this still all remains true to this day, my work-life is constantly evolving: I am learning more and more everyday about the role of a Funeral Director and through my newly learned skills, I took [what I consider] one of the biggest chances in my life and applied for College in order to become said Funeral Director. With all this busy-ness happening, you probably also have noticed a lack in posts on here. This is mainly because I have been working a lot more lately ever since we lost two staff members at work, and when I actually am off work; I am taking a break.. usually ending with me falling asleep on the couch. Hell, I haven’t even watched a movie in what feels like forever because I am so damn busy.. Be all this as it may, this past Tuesday – the 2nd of May – I received the absolute best news imaginable: I have been accepted to Humber College in Toronto [Ontario] to be a full time student [starting in September 2017] to study Mortuary Science/Funeral Studies. While I am beyond excited for this, there comes a catch.. and I am about 99.99% sure you know what I am about to say: Suddenly, everything becomes even more busy, and because of this, I have absolutely no time for warrenisweird.

[an accurate representation of both sides of my brain]

Let’s reflect for a moment: when I started warrenisweird, it was always meant to be a hobby: a if you will – place to talk about my feelings towards upcoming horror films [which I still and always will have a passion for] and movie reviews in my spare time. That last part is probably the most important part of the sentence – “in my spare time.” Little by little, I became more and more busy in my personal life, be it with work, application struggles or even just finding time to spend with my Wife. Because of this, I had no choice but to put this blog aside for a while.. Until “a while” became weeks, which felt like months. Now, especially if I am going to school in September, most of – if not all – my time and dedicated “free time” is to my education and ultimately; my future. Even after I finish the in-class portion of my schooling, I have a 5-6 day Internship [which lasts a year] before I change into that Fully Licensed Funeral Director I have been striving to become. What I am trying to say is that even after I am done school, I still would have little to no time to write up a blog post. HOWEVER, there is a silver lining to all this negativity..if can you believe it.

Although I may not have as much time to write on here, that does not mean that I am never going to write on here again – I plan on keeping the URL name [warrenisweird will forever be my namesake] and I will do my best to find time to post once and a while, there just might be a few weeks between posts.. and sometimes, no posts in a month. Also, and I realize I have said this before and failed miserably, I plan on using my Medium account as an almost “Diary” of sorts; writing about my experiences in College and other exciting life events. [if you find yourself interested, please consider following me there] Also, if you have “liked” the Facebook Page for warrenisweird, I will always/still continue to share/post horror related content. That page is not going away either! If you are a fan of warrenisweird for the movie reviews I write, those are/will be found over on Letterboxd; so follow me there if you want my thoughts on movies! [and as always do not hesitate to recommend me something to watch! It does not have to be strictly horror!]

[Where I like to think we stand as a community]

To end this word spill on a sappy lovey-dovey note, I just want to say that I appreciate every one of you that took time out of your day to read/continue to read warrenisweird. This journey into the blogging world would never have happened if not for you guys! It truly means a lot to me that people actually give a crap about what I write on here, and even engage in conversation about it – even if they disagree with my post! I love debating movie theories, and explaining why I love a certain “bad film,” it’s what connects us as horror movie fans! At least I think so, anyway. You guys are the absolute BEST and I wouldn’t trade the feeling you gave me as a writer away for anything.

So now you know. This is why I tend to “disappear” from the blog for x-amount of days/weeks, what I am up to in my personal life, and what life has for me next. I hope that I have explained this well enough, and thank you all for understanding why I am choosing to not write on here as often as I once wished I could. [At least not nearly as frequently] The best way to look at this is it is not a final goodbye, it’s “I will see you around!” As always, if you find yourself to enjoy what I do on here, then please take a minute and follow me over on my Facebook page [we’re just over 195+ likes – let’s get it to the 200 mark!] By clicking that “like” button, you’ll see every post from warrenisweird from the very moment it’s been “gone live” online and I also share links to articles and pictures/videos that will not be featured here on the blog.

Seriously though, these past few years have been a blast and if I could, I would love to continue doing this gig. Being a small time hobby, it was never meant to be a long-term career [writing online as a full time job is one of the hardest things to get into! I strongly commend those that get to do it!] As I mentioned above, I’ve also been writing my movie reviews on my Letterboxd account, this is because I’m trying to review every single movie I watch. As for my “Diary” posts? Follow me on Medium for updates on my life. These posts will be starting soon! I love you all, please do not hesitate to reach out to me through my contact page, which goes straight to my personal email. I try to reply to every one of them, so whether it’s a movie recommendation or a simple “thanks,” I can’t wait to hear from you!

As always,

An ELVIRA Funko POP! : Arriving For Halloween!

elvirapop

Contrary to what many people believe, I’m not a huge collector of Funko POPs! I have a few [Deadpool, Spider-Man, and Beetlejuice] but I only really pick up the ones that I like the character they are based on.. Unlike some people on the Internet [some people have thousands!] However, there is one that I’m planning on getting, and conveniently – it’s coming out soon! Want a hint? READ ON!

When you hear the name Elvira, only one person should come to mind.. the Halloween icon and symbol of all things spooky: the one and only Mistress Of The Dark! Oh yes, just in time for Halloween and perfect timing to celebrate her 35th Anniversary; the Mistress Of The Dark is getting her very own Funko POP! Looking at the figure, I am about 99.9% sure that this is the first Funko creation with cleavage! I’m still bitter over the fact that I didn’t get a picture with the Mistress herself when she came to comic con, but in a way to defend myself; she had a massive line up, and I wouldn’t have gotten to see the rest of the “con” if I had waited! [I will meet you, someday!] Check out the one, the only, POP! figure based on Elvira: Mistress Of The Dark below!

nzwrygp

Naturally, as a huge fan of her’s, both in sense of style, and film; I definitely am excited by this news. It’s been a long time coming for both horror fans and POP! collectors, as it was just a matter of time! Be sure to pick yours up in October when they hit shelves! But the real question is: are you going to pick up an Elvira figure? Why or Why Not? Let me know in the comments! I know for a fact that I will be, and worst case scenario and I don’t get a chance to pick one up; Christmas comes shortly after! As always, if you find yourself to enjoy what I do on here, then please take a minute and follow me over on my Facebook page [we’re at over 150+ likes – let’s get to 200!] By clicking that “like” button, you’ll see every post from warrenisweird the very moment it’s been “gone live” online; and I also share links to articles and pictures/videos that will not be featured here on the blog. So go follow over there too!

Every “like” helps me a ton, giving me the ability to write more posts for you to read, so be sure to tell the horror enthusiast in your life to do the same, and share The Facebook Page with your family and friends! I’ve also been writing way more reviews on my Letterboxd account, this is because I’m trying to review every single movie I watch  – with each review coming the very next day after viewing! Are you interested yet? Check me out over there and click that “follow” button! I’m just bound to follow you back because I like reading other people’s thoughts on film, as well as writing reviews myself!

Deja Vu? Lionsgate OFFICIALLY begins Development on SAW VIII

SAWVIIILEGACY

If you’re a regular on warrenisweird, you’re probably feeling like we’ve talked about this before; and that’s because we have. Back in mid January, I talked about how Saw VIII was still possible, and now The Tracking Board has confirmed that Lionsgate is working on another sequel..and it’s official title is “Saw: Legacy“. This.. could mean anything. Remember, for fans of the series, Jigsaw‘s games came to a “close” with 2010’s Saw 3D [sometimes titledSaw: The Final Chapter”], which was considered the end of the franchise.. But if you remember, the final scene set up a world that could easily be expanded; especially because this “finale” didn’t answer all the questions that we were given. Considering Lionsgate hasn’t made a new Saw film in over six years, it’s clear that they took the time to take a breather from the series. I, along with countless other fans have talked abut the seventh Saw wasn’t…couldn’t… be the end, and as proof; the studio has even considered remaking Wan and Whannell’s original film – which is often called one of the most important horror films of all time. [or at the very least, of it‘s time]

The only weird part of all this is who is writing the story. It isn’t Wan or Whannell, or even one of the writers of the many sequels.. it’s actually going to be Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger – who we know as the guys behind Sorority Row, Piranha 3D and Piranha 3DD! Naturally though – being as it’s their characters/original story-line – James Wan will executive produce this “new chapter” with Leigh Whannell at his side.

8s3p0ko

I always thought this ending was a cop-out – there’s no way it was the “finale”..

One of the things I always found most interesting about the Saw series is that it was meant to tell a single story across all the sequels. I mean, sure, it may have ended up a complex, and wild web of flashbacks, but at least it wasn’t just the same story over and over with a different cast every time. It did try to follow one big story and The Final Chapter did leave threads hanging for possible future contributions. At this point and time though, there’s no sense trying to guess at what Saw: Legacy will be, or what it’s trying to accomplish. Will it be a continuation? A reboot? Maybe a prequel showing John Kramer becoming Jigsaw? Nobody’s saying anything. But one thing’s pretty much certain: there will be blood.

I’m very curious what they’re going to with the franchise. I used to love the fact that every Halloween meant another Saw film, and now I feel they’ve been bled dry. [haha…sorry] But, seeing as they waited six years, and didn’t just churn out another film just to say they did, I’m thinking pretty positive..so far. Obviously, there’s no trailer, details, or even pictures that have surfaced [this news only became public in the last day] So, the next we’ll see a movie from James Wan will be The Conjuring 2, [June 10th, 2016] which I’m actually fairly excited for! But enough about me. What do You thing about yet another Saw film? Is this something that you’ve been hoping for? If so, what do you think is going to happen – a prequel? Sequel? Or maybe a reboot? Let me know in the comments below!

Kevin Smith’s “Yoga Hosers” releases FIRST CLIP:

yhfc

Remember Kevin Smith‘s Tusk? It’s difficult to believe that came out four years ago, isn’t it? I remember when it was first released, I had read somewhere that Smith had claimed that Tusk was only the “beginning of a ‘Canadian Terror’ trilogy.” I looked into it, and I found out that this was fact. As it turns out, The plan is for a trilogy of films, all set inside the same universe. Today’s movie, Yoga Hosers, features the returning characters of the two convenience store girls – Colleen and Colleen[Depp & Smith‘s daughters] along with Johnny Depp returning as Guy LaPointe. The rest of the actors will be different characters; according to Smith, he wanted to bring everybody back since they got along so well in Tusk. Now the cool thing is, he also said there would be other references to Tusk in this one [he said people refer to the “Manitoba Manatee” to which the girls reply “it was a walrus”.] I don’t know much about the 3rd movie other than it will be titled “Moose Jaws” and is supposedly to be like Jaws but with a moose. [why are you so surprised?] All this information is coming from when he has talked about it on his podcast.

The important thing to remember is that this clip was shown at Sundance this year, and like most of his films, Kevin Smith is a writer you either love or hate. In his new installment Yoga Hosers, we follow “Colleen Collette and Colleen McKenzie, two teenage besties from Winnipeg who love yoga and live on their smartphones. But when these sophomores get invited to a senior party by the school hottie, the Colleens accidentally uncover an ancient evil buried beneath their Canadian convenience store.” In this first clip from the film, we see Colleen and Colleen talking to the “school hottie” about a certain party, and for some reason – it tries to look all..artsy? [I don’t even think that’s the right word for it] Let’s check it out below!

Now, maybe it’s because I’m not a teenager anymore, but I’m really confused by the conversation that’s shared between all these teens. Although, from a film point of view, maybe that was the point; maybe we weren’t meant to understand to show that teenagers are not understandable..or maybe I’m looking too hard into it.

Ultimately, I’m excited for this to get wide-spread release, I was excited for Tusk, [hell, I was part of the #WalrusYes movement] and I love the feel that comes from this clip. I know it doesn’t seem like the biggest and best new film from Smith, but it’s important to note that it seems these movies – Tusk, Yoga Hosers, Moose Jaws – are being made for him. He’s not looking for high class fame from them, he’s not trying to say he deserves every award by making them; if anything [to me anyway] it comes off as he’s doing this for fun; for himself. I think that’s what film making should be. Yes, do it for the fans as well, but for the most part – do it for you. [that was deep]

[left to right: Harley Quinn Smith, Lily-Rose Depp]

Like always, this is where I turn to You: are You planning on seeing Yoga Hosers when it receives wide-spread theater releases? Why or Why Not? Based on the poster, [which the above picture is taken from] it certainly has a color palette of the 1970s, which could be a good or a bad thing. If you’re interested in learning more about the Sundance Film Festival, make sure you check out their official page here!

Annoucement: something a little different — an update

If you’ve been following warrenisweird for awhile now, you probably have noticed that there’s one category of post that doesn’t come up as much as it used to: Journals. They used to be more frequent, and they used to be a ‘once and a while’ sort of thing, to keep you – the readers – up to date with what I have been up to outside of the blogging world. However, I hardly post these anymore; and they’re something that I feel doesn’t fit the general theme of my blog; even if it is about myself. So as an effort to use it more, and a way to steer away from that kind of post here, I plan on not posting any Journal posts on here anymore, though the ones I’ve already written; will remain..and the Journal posts will cease to exist. Or will they? What I mean by this is that, I’m not saying that I’ll never writing anything about myself and updates about myself again, I just mean that they won’t be featured on warrenisweird, and that’s where Medium comes in..

Medium works in a way that makes anyone feel like they’re an author of their own story, without the hassle of feeling like they need to build an audience in the blogging atmosphere [blogosphere?] It’s been called “a new place on the Internet where people share ideas and stories that are longer than 140 characters and not just for friends.” Which makes sense, since one of the co-founders of Twitter designed it. Although it’s a blogging platform designed for smaller stories that “make your day better and manifestos that change the world,” it has it’s way of helping you find the right audience for whatever you have to say. I think that’s what attracted me to it – I could say what I want, how I want, and whoever is interested; can read it. If not, they move on in their lives and it doesn’t affect them. Which, in turn, doesn’t affect me. It’s pretty great for that reason. Surprisingly, I’ve actually been on Medium for awhile now – check my profile here –  but I never ended up using it, since I’d tend to write elsewhere: whether Facebook or warrenisweird. Don’t think I’m going anywhere, because I’m definitely not; I’m just trying to say that warrenisweird is going to be strictly horror related posts now, and personal things – like what I’ve been up to outside of blogging – will be on Medium. With all that said and done , I just wanted to share this, I know it’s probably not the post you expected from me today, but here it is. I promise come the next post, it will be horror-related, but I just wanted to share this in case someone was wondering why there hasn’t been any Journals as of late. In fact, be sure to catch up on what I’ve been posting over on Medium by reading my most recent post, titled “A Twist Of Fate.” It’s essentially an update on one of the biggest things happening in my life right now, which has me both excited and nervous. [but also, something that’s been a long time coming]

Also, if find yourself to enjoy what I do here – whether it’s updates like this or movie reviews/news – please take a minute and follow me over on my Facebook page [it’s at over 120+ likes – only a few more and we’ll have reached over 130!] By clicking that “like” button, you’ll see every post from warrenisweird the very moment it’s been posted online; and I also share links to articles and pictures/videos that will not be featured here on the blog. WEIRDO’WEEN #0.5: An Introduction/Tim Burton’s Hansel and Gretel [1982]

weirdoween2015In all my time blogging about movies and movie-like news, I’ve learned one thing: people seem to love movie reviews. Whether it’s whenever I post one here on warrenisweird, or on my Letterboxd account, it’s something that people seem to love..or love to hate, which is a good -or a bad- thing. I enjoy writing them, and it gives me a feeling of excitement knowing that there’s at least one person out there that either agrees, or disagrees with my thoughts on a film. Thus, me doing something new during this, and every upcoming, Halloween Season.. I call it: weirdo’ween!

Usually – as an almost tradition – during the month of October, I watch more horror than I usually would, in order to get myself pumped for the 31st, when I usually watch Trick ‘r Treat. [I often consider it the definitive Halloween movie] Therefore, since tomorrow marks the first day of October, I have to prepare myself to watch; I already have a list written up of what I’ll be most likely be watching [as subject is to change at any time] and as someone who enjoys writing reviews [and you all seem to enjoy reading my thoughts on them] I will be watching -and then writing a spoiler filled review- of a movie every night, ending with Trick ‘r Treat on the 31st of the month. Naturally, this means the reviews might come off as long sometimes, depending how much gets said about each one! If at any time during the month you have a suggestion for the next film/review, be sure to leave it in a comment – because I just might watch it! As an introduction to weirdo’ween, let’s start with a direct to TV special that was never released to the general public, at least not on home video: Tim Burton‘s Hansel & Gretel from 1982! I’m a huge fan of Burton‘s, so this should be interesting, right? well – let’s just cut to the review, shall we? We’ll talk about the obscurities afterwards.

Burton‘s Hansel & Gretel follows two children who are lured into the woods and are left for dead by their stepmother, who claims she cannot feed them. When they awaken, they come up to a house made of cake, and comfortably eat, and meet a woman who invites them to enter her “cake home”. Naturally, these two kids agree to go inside… only to find that this woman is actually a witch. It’s nothing new. We all know the fairy tale. Like expected, this version of the story follows the same structure and, in general, a lot of elements, including parts of the story that are often changed, like the swan scene. But, to many people’s surprise, it does change a few things.. and those changes – are fair sized. For some reason, the main cast is Asian, not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting. To add to this obscure piece of ‘art’, there is martial arts sequences – complete with shurikens. [seriously? what the hell am I watching?!] Remember in the original story, the idea was to to get the siblings fatter and fatter so the witch could eat them? Well, what’s used to fatten Hansel is a gingerbread man -that talks- and demands to be eaten.. We also see one of them getting grabbed by the many hands that are seen attached to a marshmallow bed he was seen sleeping in. I mean, it’s Hansel & Gretel, but it’s really not.. Even the wicked women in this are played by the same person, and it’s a man! In case you’re wondering we even seen him eat all of the scenery – whether it’s meant to be sugar, candy or otherwise.

If you haven’t already been able to tell, it’s fairly disturbing. I know you’re probably wondering but before you ask “isn’t this a children’s film?”, the answer is yes, but it is also a Brother’s Grimm story, and don’t forget, it’s also a Burton piece. He’s known for his trademarks, and they’re definitely shown in this short: gothic and surreal set pieces, creative design/visuals, exaggerated features, such as their huge dinner table, and some times, the same object can be both considered creepy, yet cute. In Hansel & Gretel, Father is a toy maker, allowing the viewer to see a lot of wound-up figures, though they’re mostly used in the opening sequence [did I mention that one of these eats another?!] The film is made up of both stop motion and live action; and sadly, you can usually tell where one ends and the other begins.Sometimes, the sets look cardboard-y, and some of the props don’t really feel “real”, although this could be intentional. Lastly, the cinematography is good, showing us how Burton‘s style is going to become in future movies.

Tim Burton‘s Hansel & Gretal is one hell of a movie, and it feels like a dream; you really can’t tell what’s real or not.. it’s obscure, it’s colorful, and it’s dark – and I don’t mean the set pieces. It’s definitely something you have to experience for yourself to get a feel for what I mean, but that could be said about any movie.. So because it’s something that’s only surfaced in the last few years, I have a treat for you: [that won’t be part of the rest of weirdo’ween] Here’s Tim Burton‘s Hansel & Gretel in it’s full obscurity below:

So this was #0.5 of weirdo’ween, with tomorrow being the first official movie review for the Halloween/weirdo’ween season. [weirdo’ween #01] Although I have the first few film reviews planned already, please let me know in a comment or two which movie[s] you want to see reviewed next! FRIGHT RAGS brings back memories of “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure” !

garfieldandodie

writer’s note: I know it’s been about a week now since I wrote anything here, but this past week was hell for me. a lot happened, and happened fast, in the span of a few days; so I put off writing so no negative words came about. All I ask is for no one to ask about it, because it’s more or less resolved but I assure you – warrenisweird isn’t going anywhere, and nothing happened between Stephanie and I. Everything is more or less back to normal..

Thanks for understanding,

Warren

If you follow me just about anywhere online, you know that I absolutely love pop culture characters. [Especially ones from the 1980s, even if I did grow up in 1992!] I always have, – and probably always will – enjoyed the idea of characters such as Pee-Wee Herman and even ones people seem to have forgotten; like Falcor from The NeverEnding Story! One such character that I used to obsess over was a lazy, orange cat..who happened to have an insatiable lust for lasagna. Of course, I’m talking about Garfield!

Garfield feels like he’s been around for forever, doesn’t he? From comic books, to toys, to a Saturday morning cartoon, to a live action film! [that granted – wasn’t all that good..] But hold on, let’s back it up a step: a morning cartoon. Garfield and Friends was an animated series based on the comic strip series by Jim Davis. It ran on CBS Saturday mornings from September 17, 1988 to December 10, 1994, with reruns airing until October 7, 1995. The show was insanely popular, as it ran for seven seasons! I remember watching the show when I was younger [which I guess means I caught the last few seasons based on the age of the show] and it sparked my love for the characters more than ever. But let’s cut to the chase shall we? Why am I talking about Garfield of all characters? I’m a fan of the gorier, more graphic horror films – and Garfield is the farthest thing from? Or is he?

Along with the original series, Garfield and Friends had a Halloween special one year titled:Garfield’s Halloween Adventure [fun fact: it was originally titled: Garfield In Disguise] and is considered one of the darkest tales in the character’s history. It’s eerie, it’s atmospheric, and most of all – it scared the hell out of me as a kid. The entire episode can actually be watched here, as well as a few other Halloween cartoons from the 80s [which is totally worth watching!] though the Garfield special is the greatest of the bunch.

However, it seems that Fright Rags also remembers the creepy cartoon and it’s popularity, and for its 30th Anniversary, they have not one, but four different designs coming soon in black and orange, for both boys and girls, in zip up hoodies and in baseball tee format! They’re not available yet but you can pre-order them now on their website! Orders are planned to be shipped in mid-October to be on time for Halloween. So think of it this way, Mondays may not be the greatest thing in the world, but right now – these shirts are some of the coolest things around; check out the designs below!

[click the picture to pre-order this design!]

[click the picture to pre-order this design!]

[click on the picture to pre-order this design!]

[click the picture to pre-order this design!]

So now the question remains, will you be ordering any of the shirt designs above? If so, which one? I’m partial to the Bat-Garfield on the baseball tee, but that’s because I don’t have nearly enough baseball tee designs in my closet! Another question I have is who is your favorite pop culture icon from the 1980s/1990s? Is Garfield one of your favorites? Or is he just like any lazy cat? Let me know in a comment or two! If you found yourself to enjoy this article, then please take a minute and follow me over on my Facebook page [it’s at over 100+ likes – only 15 more and we’ll have reached 130!] By clicking that “like” button, you’ll see every post from warrenisweird the very moment it’s been posted online; as well as links to articles and pictures/videos that will not be featured here on the blog. Every “like” helps me a ton, giving me the ability to write more posts for you to read, so be sure to tell the horror enthusiast in your life to do the same, and share The Facebook Page with your family and friends!

[on a completely separate note, I have a big idea rolling around in my skull for when October comes, which is coming sooner than people want to believe – so keep your eyes open by following here on the blog, on Twitter or on Facebook.. STAY TUNED!]

Dear Mr. Craven, Thanks For The Nightmares!

We horror fans are a weird breed: we actually enjoy watching people get attacked by angry ghosts, or sometimes murderous dream demons! We also tend to remember the first time we watched a horror film; either by date, or by film. We also tend to favor a certain Movie Director or two as well. In my case, it’s Mr. Wes Craven; who fans will know as the man behind such classics like Scream, and my personal favorite, A Nightmare On Elm Street. I remember the first time I saw both of these films: Scream was at a friend’s place and I had to hide under the blankets during the opening death sequence, and Nightmare was late at night [in my room] when I was about 13 years old. Back then, I was terrified by the film, I feared for the night because; what could be scarier than someone attacking you when you’re most vulnerable? When you’re asleep? Although scared, I was curious, so as I got older, I began watching the sequels..quickly making the Nightmare film series [as cheesy as they got] my all time favorite horror film franchise.

Besides being known far and wide for creating the iconic Freddy Krueger and Ghostface, Craven also wrote and produced film features for television and occasionally, wrote novels. Wes Craven was a humanities professor before leaving academia to work in post production. As most horror fans can tell you, his first official credited film was the controversial film The Last House On The Left:which he wrote, directed and edited back in 1972! Naturally, he followed it up with the blackly comic The Hills Have Eyes and Swamp Thing, which – if you know your comic books – was an early entry in the comic book to film adaptation genre! I only started to notice Wes during Nightmare though, Where the surreal slasher film is credited with having started something called the “dream reality” style of 1980s horror filmmakers and in turn; helped launch independent film studio New Line Cinema, which is sometimes referred to as “the house that Freddy built.”

[artwork is credited to @CodySchibi; I love the art-style!]

However, as I’m sure you saw all over the internet: Wes Craven had been struggling with brain cancer for a long time.. and last night, it caught up to him; passing away [in his LA home] at the age of 76.. a true master of horror – has left us. One of the last projects Craven was working on was MTV’s TV series adaptation of Scream, on which he worked as an executive producer. The series was recently renewed for a second season, back on July 29th. [I still have to start the series..now more than ever!] Wes Craven was a tremendous visionary whose sensibility for scares has connected with generations of MTV fans,” MTV has said in a statement. “We are honored to have worked with him and proud to carry on his legacy with Scream: Our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

It’s a truly sad day for us horror fans, we lost one of the greats.. From Ghostface to Krueger, horror won’t be the anywhere near the same without someone who helped push the envelope in the genre. Although horror will last without him, it won’t ‘feel’ right without Craven, who made us feel fear when we’re arguably, the most vulnerable..

So this post is for you Wes, you started scaring me at a fairly young age; and I wouldn’t have it any other way! You’ve inspired so many horror directors with your stylized cinematography, but you can’t replace an original. From everyone who loves the horror genre as much as you did; this is us saying “thanks”. Fun Fact: Craven actually told The Los Angeles Times in an interview: “My goal is to die in my 90s on the set, say, `That’s a wrap,’ after the last shot, fall over dead and have the grips go out and raise a beer to me.” and raise a beer we did, Wes, this one’s for you!

SCREAM FACTORY announces TEN new releases!

You know what I love? movies. You know what I love more than movies? [my wife – yes I can say that now] when a cult movie gets re-released! That’s where Shout! Factory [and their sister site; Scream! Factory] succeeds; and quickly became one of my favorite film/TV on DVD distributors. Starting back in 2004, Shout! Factory released the complete series of cult classic TV show: Freaks and Geeks with tons of bonus features – which they’ve since become known for. I won’t go far into their history, because that’s not why you’re here, so let’s get on with the horror! As I said above, Scream! Factory is the side of the company that releases the cult horror; which is what I am [slowly] starting to collect. With titles like Sleepaway Camp and even one of my personal favorites: Army Of Darkness on it’s way, the company seems to know what their fans want. With #SDCC long and done for this year, many things were mentioned [see my last post*] and one such thing was Scream! Factory‘s plan to release TEN new films on Blu Ray!

That’s right, ten brand new titles, successfully acquired for Blu-Ray release. While none of the following have solid release dates yet, most [if not all] are expected before the end of 2016. I suppose this only means that my movie shelf is slowly going to collapse under it’s own weight, cause each one is either a film I’ve been looking to pick up, or I haven’t had time to pick up. So enough talk and let’s look at these expected releases, shall we? I’ve included the movie’s poster, and a quick plot synopsis, just to get you in the mood for some cult film! Truthfully, I’m actually excited for quite a few of these! Ready..Go!

Women’s Prison Massacre: this film follows Emanuelle, who is a reporter who comes just a little too close to exposing a corrupt city official, and is therefore sent to prison on charges. [because relevance, I guess] While in prison, the inmates are constantly harassed [and even tortured] by the prison workers. It’s the kind of place where overly loving prisoners have their heads forced underwater, while others are told to look, so they know what could happen to them.. Emanuelle finds an enemy in the deranged Albina, someone who “runs the prison.” For the pleasure of the warden, Emanuelle and Albina are forced to fight each other..with knives! It doesn’t help that four men from inside the prison escape and ultimately, take over the prison. Women’s Prison Massacre is violent, it’s gory, and it’s Italian. What’s not to like?

Blood & Lace: with a title like Blood & Lace, you know it’s going to be interesting. Our story here follows young Ellie Masters, who’s prostitute mother and her lover are beaten to death in bed while little Ellie is sent to an isolated orphanage run by Mrs. Deere and her handyman who ‘helps’ out at the orphanage. The only one who seems to be taking an interest in her well being is detective Calvin Carruthers. While a lot of unpleasant surprises are in store for Ellie in this movie, the biggest is the fact that Mrs. Deere [and her handyman] are both brutal sadists, who run the orphanage like a concentration camp, proving that her mother’s hammer-wielding killer is now most likely stalking her!

Troll/Troll 2: Probably the film[s] I’m most excited for on this list, the Troll movies are bad – like “Oh My Godddddd!bad, but you know what? It’s probably the reason I love them so much. This one was a long time coming from Scream! Factory so I’m definitely going to have to grab this one on Blu Ray. Though I doubt it, I’m hoping for one of the special features to be Best Worst Movie, which is the documentary about the making of Troll 2. Fun Fact, did you know this film featured a ‘hero’ named Harry Potter before the boy wizard? Weird, I know..

Ghost Story: In this movie, we meet four successful [yet elderly] gentlemen, who are all members of a group known as The Chowder Society, where they tell ghost stories to one another. The interesting thing is that all four men share a gruesome, 50-year old secret.. and I’m not talking about their friendship! But when one of Edward Wanderley‘s twin sons dies in an accident, the group begins to see a pattern of frightening events developing before their eyes.

The Guardian: I’m just going tothrow you right into the plot for this film, okay? Meet Phil and Kate. They have a baby boy. His name is Jake. The happy couple decide to hire a babysitter named Camilla to look after Jake, and quickly she becomes almost like part of the family. The family’s neighbor, Ned, ends up takes a liking to Camilla and asks her out on a date. Quickly, she refuses, but heartbroken Ned follows her home, only to discover that she is not quite human. When Camilla discovers that she has been followed, she leaves a message for Phil and Kate which reveals that she has special plans for young Jake..

The Car: While traveling through the desert on their bikes, two teenage are murdered by a black car. When this car hit a hitchhiker and the crime is witnessed, Sheriff Everett puts his men on high alert and plans to put road blocks in the area to arrest the driving murderer. Sooner than later, he becomes a victim of the car and newly appointed Sheriff Wade Parent begins a man hunt for the vehicle that is seemingly threatening his town. Though, it seems to be impossible to be located. It’s only then that Wade realizes that he might be dealing with a car with supernatural powers.

Nightmares: An anthology film full of horror! Once again, this is one of the releases I’m most excited for. In one story, a woman who leaves her house late at night to drive to the store while a killer is loose..and encounters some problems. In the second, an arcade kid’s obsession with a game leads to deadly consequences. The third story follows a small town priest who loses his faith and decides to leave town – only to be stalked by a mysterious black pick-up truck.. Ending with the final story, with a family’s problem with a rat is larger than they think..

Death Becomes Her: Helen, a writer. Madeline, an actress. These two have hated each other for years. For good reason though, since Madeline is married to Ernest, who was once Helen‘s fiance! After recovering from a mental breakdown, Helen swears her revenge by planning to steal back Ernest and killing Madeline. But both rivals have secretly swallowed a miracle cure for aging; as they accidentally discover, when trying to eliminate the other, that they have both become immortal and that “life” will never be the same again..

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie: I’m sure I don’t have to say much about this movie; it’s definitely a “you love it or hate it” kind of film, but it’s a cult classic for sure! It follows seven [disgusting] kids who each have their own set of interesting personalities. They’re being made of the green mud coming out of garbage can, and once alive; their master gives them rules to obey.. Though, they think that life is funnier without following stupid regulations like no television or no candy. Naturally, this might just cause some problems. It’s gross, it’s raunchy, it’s everything you want – it’s The Garbage Pail Kids!

The Return Of The Living Dead: MORE BRAINS! It usually follows the idiots, doesn’t it? When a pair of idiotic employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly toxin into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food – brains. This film is already a classic, but with the Tarman, it’s easily one of the better zombie classics.

Hopefully this list didn’t feel too long, but if you’ve made it this far; I need to know..for science – what re-release are you looking forward to? Is it something sadistic like Blood & Lace? Or are you more a fan of The Garbage Pail Kids? Let me know in a comment or two below! in today’s most depressing news: Sir Christopher Lee has passed away at 93

Let’s be real for a minute: it’s always sad when someone passes away, but nothing shakes the world more than when it happens to be a well known actor – it’s as if everyone goes haywire – we all know how we reacted when Robin Williams left this planet, or in the case of us horror fans; when Betsy Palmer [the original Mrs. Voorhees] passed on. However, today; we lose yet another horror actor – a veteran who has been in over 280 films over the span of his career, and that’s just his acting; of course I’m talking about Sir Christopher Lee. [above] According to The Guardian, Lee had been hospitalized for some time for respiratory problems and heart failure, and ultimately – led to his unfortunate passing.

Sir Christopher Lee was at the age of 93, where the actor – who is best known for a variety of films from The Wicker Man, Dracula adaptations, all the way through to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy – passed away on this past Sunday morning at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, England.

I already miss Sir Count Dooku..[just me?]

Later in Christopher Lee’s career, he could be seen in newer [somewhat]classic films, such as Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Sleepy Hollow, Star Wars: Episode II: Attack Of The Clones [above], Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Season Of The Witch, and even Dark Shadows. If it wasn’t clearly obvious, Tim Burton was clearly a huge fan of the man. As well as his career in [many] film[s], Lee also released a series of heavy metal albums, including, but not limited to: “Charlemagne: The Omens Of Death”, which argueably has the best heavy metal cover art. And if that wasn’t bad-ass enough, he was also knighted in 2009 for services to drama and charity, being awarded the BAFTA fellowship in early 2011.

In short, it’s a sad day already and it isn’t even ten AM yet.. I find it super sad to know that a man who has been a master at the craft of horror has passed on, but at the ripe age of 93; he had his share of the movie and music world at his fingertips..not to mention that Force Lightning! Today’s question is fairly straight forward: what was your favorite Christopher Lee film? Let me know in a comment or two down below!  While I enjoy Taste The Blood Of Dracula, My earliest memory of him is always Tim Burton‘s Sleepy Hollow and the Star Wars prequels.
